How we present here texts in ENGLISH LANGUAGE:

Most of our CONVENT LIBRARY eBook titles (including electronic Bibliographic records in International University Library Standards) are in German Language, often also Translation, 180 titles are in Latin Language.  Most names of our collections, sets and subsets etc. are also in German Language. 

So, let’s continue with German Language, and later again with English.

Ein Gebetsbuch dient zur Andacht zu einer bestimmten Zeit, waehrend dieser eine bestimmte Passage aus der Heiligen Schrift gelesen wird. Beispiele sind die Morgenandacht, die Andacht zur Angelusstunde (12;00 Uhr), die Abendandacht. Angelus Gebete koennen auch um 06:00 Uhr bzw 18:00 Uhr stattfinden.

Die Gebetsbuch – Lesungen werden unterbrochen an Sonntagen, an kirchlichen Feirtagen oder Gedenktagen.

Durch Gebetsbuecher koennen wir erkennen, was den Menschen damals wichtig war (“auf dem Herzen brannte”), in welcher Form der Text im Gebetsbuch dargeboten wurde (beispielsweise aggressiv oder fordernd oder demuetig). Oder war ein Gebetsbuch zum Vorlesen – und falls ‘ja’, durch ‘wen’ – oder diente ein Gebetsbuch zum Selbstgebrauch zuhause?

Wenn man so will, war (und ist) das Gebetsbuch ein Medium zur Transformation eines Inhaltes auf dem Weg von der Kirche bzw. Priester zum Zuhoerer bzw. Mitbeter, in der Hoffnung des glaeubigen und betenden Menschen, dass Gott das Gebet erhoert.

Dafuer wurde / wird es inhaltlich und didaktisch aufbetreitet, je nach den Schaeflein des Priesters bzw. der Kirche. So gibt es Gebetsbuecher zu verschieden Tageszeiten (Angelusstunde), fuer den kleinmuetigen Menschen, zum Trost suchenden Menschen, zum raeuigen Suender usw., also je nach ‘Zielgruppe’.

Translation:
Through prayer books, we can understand what was important to people at that time (“burned on their hearts”), and in which form the text was presented in the prayer book (for example, aggressively, demandingly, or humbly?).

And was the prayer book intended to be read aloud (and if so, by whom?) or for personal use at home?

In a way, a prayer book was (and still is) a medium for transforming content on its journey from the church or priest to the listener or fellow worshipper, in the hope of the believer and praying person that God will reach the prayer. For this reason, it was and is presented differently in terms of content and didactics, depending on the flock of the priest or church.

Thus, there are prayer books for different times of a day (morning, lunchtime, evening), for the faint-hearted, for those seeking comfort, for the sinner who has repented, etc., i.e., depending on the target audience of the prayer book..

In our opinion, these examples for using in a scholarly approach such prayer books are highly interesting ‘indirect’ sources. We believe that through these ‘media’ prayer books (as described above), we can research mindsets of the people and – eventually – can understand their lifes in past times, true to our motto “Research in past times, improved understanding in present times.”

This research idea applies also o sermon collections (see Religion), which are particularly interesting from the perspective of a so called ‘lost world’. And we encouraged Academics in a similar way through our Women’s Literature collections of the 18th & 19th Centuries. So we understand this topic.

A prayer book as well as sermons can be a mirror backwards to understand those societies in a different way and view through such ‘old’ medium

A classic version of a prayer book is said to have existed since the year 1662, and the peak of prayer book publications is said to have been in the 19th century.
