Imaginative Literature

German-language literature, first published between 1790 and 1870...

…by approximately 1,050 authors,

…in approximately 2,653 titles with approximately 1,850,000 pages,

divided into literature genres: see below the summary of the titles per genre, written by male / anonymous authors,

This collection also contains approximately 410 German-language titles with a total of approximately 250,000 pages, written by 150 women.

The focus of this fiction collection is primarily on the period between the Congress of Vienna and the opening of the National Assembly in Frankfurt’s St. Paul’s Church. Terms like Biedermeier and Vormärz represent an antagonistic sense of time during this era.

Corresponding to the end of the Classical period, the heyday and late phase of Romanticism as well as the beginning of the Restoration period, this collection also includes first editions of well-known authors such as Hofmannsthal, Kleist, Brentano and Heine.

The 1,763 titles / 1,036,241 pages by male / anonymous authors within this collection of German-language literature from 1790 to 1870 are also divided by literary genre as follows:

Novels in 660 titles, 333,180 pages by male / anonymous authors. Note: For the period 1815–1830, slightly more than 100 of these German-language novels were compared in the following catalogs: National Union Catalog, Washington, four titles were listed; British Library, London, three titles were listed; Bibliotheque Nationale à Strasbourg (responsible for German-language literature in France), no titles were listed.
